SHOU LAO, the Chinese god of longevity, is--along with FU (the god of happiness) and LU (the god of wealth or good fortune)--one of the three most popular gods of Chinese folklore. SHOU LAO is instantly identifiable by his high forehead and large cranium, his full beard, his staff or walking stick, and the large peach (a symbol of longevity) he holds in his right hand. He is often accompanied, as here, by a crane or pelican (or sometimes a deer, also all symbols of long life). This colorfully hand-painted ceramic statue--in black, brown, gold, green, and red--is vintage, dating at least to the 1970s. (The figure of SHOU LAO is ancient, and dates to 220-250 AD). Appropriate for display on an end or entry table, in a special nook, or on your mantel, The statue stands 14.5" high and is 4" wide at its base. It weighs 3 lbs.2 oz before packing. SHOU LAO (also sometimes called SHOUXING or SHOULAO) is in excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, scratches, scrapes, or repairs.
